Music
- FreeRIP: Extract CD audio to your hard drive in WAV, WMA, FLAC, OGG Vorbis and MP3. Fully customizable quality settings. It's also a converter and a music file tagger. Very easy to use.
- Audacity: For recording and editing music files. It supports muti-track recording, and filters to enhance music.
- CD Burner XP: Burn your own CD's and DVD's. Make music or data CD's. And record movies onto DVD to play in your livingroom DVD player.
- Media Monkey: The best free music organizer and jukebox. Also has one of the best file tagging out there. Can auto find Album Cover Art online and attach it to your files.
- EviLyrics: Works with your music organizer (even iTunes) and finds and displays lyrics for all your music files. Go to their website to see if your music organizer is supported.
- Quintessential Player: This is the best little music player. It has micro modes so it can sit in the corner of your system all the time. Many awesome skins, and a great high quality CD ripper. It loads fast and small, so it's great for playing a file quickly without having to wait for a large program like Media Monkey or iTunes to load. It also integrates into Windows Explorer so you can add music files from a folder to a playlist just by right clicking on them.
- Tag Scanner: The best music tagger for large groups of files. Indespensible if you have a large colection
Note: If your music files are DRM protected files that have been bought from iTunes, then you can only play them using iTunes. You will not be able to use one of the better music organizers. Too bad for you. DRM is bad. Fight The Man!
Video
- DVD Shrink: It doesnt get any better than this. Free software that will copy retail DVD's, remove copyright restrictions, AND (yes, there's more!) compress them down to fit on one DVD for easy recording. You can choose to copy the entire disc or just the main movie, removing special features.
- DVD Fab Decrypyer: Every now and then you'll come across a disc that DVD Shrink cant rip. That's when you use this program instead. Copy the entire disc at full size, and then use DVD Shrink to shrink it and slice it up.
- K-Lite Video Codec Pack: This will install all (and I do mean ALL) of the video codecs (COder-DECoders) that you will ever need to play any video file on your computer. Video that is downloaded over the web is compressed and you need the proper codec to decompress it and view it. This is all of them.
- SUPER Converter: And it really is. You have to have a little knowledge of video and audio formats to use this program, but there is none better. It will convert any video format into any other. Hands down, the boss of video converters.
- Jodix ipod Video Converter: Converts DVD movies for use on the ipod. First you have to rip the disc with DVD Shrink, and then run it through this program. Then you just import the video into iTunes and put it on your ipod. Easy. Here's a step by step tutorial.
- Video 9 PSP Converter: Converts DVD movies for use on your PSP. Same as above - First you have to rip the disc with DVD Shrink, and then run it through this program. But this one will do the whole job of putting it on your PSP for you. Here's a step by step tutorial.
- Creativity Pack for Windows Movie Maker (WMM): WMM is not the best video editing program in the world, but it is included in every copy of Windows. This adds a little bit of extra fun to it.
Photos
- XnView photo organizer and editor: Loads fast and doesnt hog your system's resources. Use for viewing and organizing photos, as well as performing minor enhancements (crop, resize, etc)
- GIMP Pro Photo Editor: When you are ready for more serious photo work, try this app. It's the best you can get, short of paying for Photoshop.
- Sqirlz Morph: Very simple app for morphing two or more images together.
- ToyCon Icon Converter: Converts almost any image file to an icon, and back again. Just drag and drop. (This is a zip file. See "Utilities" below if you need a program to unzip this file)
- Microsoft Photo Story 3: Easily make slide shows, with music and transitions. Add your own pictures, and you are pretty much done.
Utilities
- Maxthon Internet Browser: We all know that Internet Explorer (IE) is just a program that shows you web pages, and that you can use any program to do that. Maxthon is the best of the best. It is so much faster and cooler than IE, that you will wonder why any uses IE at all. It blocks ads, recovers all open web pages after a crash, re-open previously closed tabs history, auto logon to webs sites, screen captures, spell checker, and is completely skinnable (check out this screenshot of what it looks like on my machine). There are too many features to list here. Use it. It's awesome.
- IE 7 Pro: If you dont want to install Maxthon (which makes no sense at all) then this is a must download for anyone who uses IE to surf the web. Adds some of the extra functionality that Maxthon has. Not all of it, but some.
- IE Tweak Uitility: If you dont want to install IE Pro (which makes no sense at all) you can use this utility to put the menu bar back on top of IE, WHERE IT BELONGS. And remove that hideous search bar, and command bar.
- IZarc File Compressor and Expander: This is for opening all those ZIP files.
